Artificial Intelligence: Navigating Challenges & Harnessing The Data Potential in ASEAN

23/24 AIBP ASEAN Enterprise Market Overview Report

In the latest AIBP ASEAN Enterprise Innovation Survey of more than 800 enterprise IT & business leaders in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam,

  • 65% are planning to invest in Big Data Analytics over the next 2-4 years

  • 34% are planning to invest in in AI & ML

The report is made available for free.

  • The most important thing is how the enterprises not only the healthcare providers, but many other industry players will be looking at the data and defining the data structure, data platform, and also the language that data can be put together because data driven decision making is all about how to bring out the best perceived value to the customers and how we can make better decisions and better choice for customers with the assistance of the data, especially in modern society where the customer demands are changing every day.

  • When it comes to data analytics, we have long term strategic planning. We have an initiative to develop and institutionalise the capability of data analytics across Jasa Marga. We divided the use cases of data analytics into two groups. So, the first one is the use cases that must be done by the IT division. And the second one is the use cases, which can be distributed into other divisions. So, consequently, we have to give training about that analytics, not only to IT employees, but also to all other employees to really get the value from all the data we have.

  • I think more and more, especially as we go more digital, more data will be collected, and with this data collection, we will also be able to understand what are the more important behaviours of consumers or transactions, what's more important for them, their vulnerabilities, and so on and so forth. Right and if we're able to use and harness this data properly, then better products, you know, better experiences can get delivered to the market, including open finance.

  • We try to govern the data as much as possible because if they come in unstructured, we use a lot of time to structure and analyse, but if they come as structured data, it's really easy for us to process in terms of data analytics, big data and implementing AI.

  • Monetisation is only made possible if data could be made available and trusted. This was the journey in PETRONAS anchoring on Data Liberalisation Program which allows for data sharing on vertical and horizontal integration, made possible with Enterprise Data Hub (EDH) which functioned as the analytics data platform with robust technology stacks, allowing big data processing, advanced analytics with AI/ML capabilities and with solid data governance practices and features built. The current focus is to build the right ecosystem for management of unstructured data with the ability to Trace, Trust and Monetise, and these are currently in motion with the use of Generative AI, Knowledge Graph, Cognitive services and relevant technology stacks built in Enterprise Data Hub and Enterprise Knowledge Intelligence Hub.

Elevating the ASEAN Digital Economy by Harnessing Data and AI Excellence

14 March 2024

ASEAN Innovation Retreat, Singapore

At the forefront of digitalisation in ASEAN is the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into various sectors, promising to revolutionise industries, drive innovation, and elevate economies.

At the bi-annual AIBP ASEAN Innovation Retreat, we dove into a spirited discussion on how we can elevate the ASEAN Digital Economy by harnessing data and AI excellence.

Key highlights:

  • Bias and Input Quality: There was a recurring theme of how biases in prompts and the quality of input data significantly impact the outcomes generated by AI systems

  • Ethics and Morality: Who or what decides and justifies the decision-making processes?

  • Learning and Adaptability: AI's self-learning capabilities and continuous improvement means people have to find ways to add value where AI cannot

Data Networking and Workshop for Thailand

28 February 2024

Digital Economy Promotion Agency, Bangkok, Thailand

While Thailand's banking and financial services sector have been very forward-looking in their explorations on GenAI and new technology, the varying stages of data maturity among Thailand enterprises reflects a spectrum of technologies still being adopted - with some having just gone paperless, some at the stage of consolidating data dashboards and platforms, and others further along with AI and more advanced technologies incorporated.

Key highlights:

  • Data as an Asset that lays the foundation and fuels decision-making and innovation

  • Data Champions and Data Stewards drive and execute data-driven initiatives hand in hand

  • Tech Adoption: Choose wisely! Assess the maturity level of technology (is maturity of Gen AI aligned with your business goals?) and align tech solutions with business goals

  • Generative AI & GPT-4.0 as a key step towards smarter insights and enhanced decision-making

Highlights from 2023 ASEAN Advisory Board Meetings

Bridging expectations for Digital Transformation - Thailand

    • Enterprises know that technology works, but adoption is tied to the value end users see: solution providers need to understand the pain points of end-users (beyond IT/tech teams) in order to encourage adoption

    • Need to bridge technology and business, and rethink the value-add of people: enterprises are ready to co-work (and co-create) with tech providers through knowledge-sharing

    • A relook at technology investment costs and pricing: is there a possibility for investment-sharing (hence risk sharing) between technology provider and enterprises to ensure successes from the beginning?

    • Start-up solutions are novel, but sometimes need help to be able to address a real business case: enterprises are open to validate and ready them

Cybersecurity, Food Security and ESG Goals - Malaysia

    • Cybersecurity is crucial for digital transformation success as organisations become more vulnerable to cyber threats.

    • Investing in proactive cybersecurity measures is essential for protecting digital assets and infrastructure.

    • Food security is a significant issue in Malaysia, and measures need to be taken to ensure the country's food supply remains secure and sustainable.

    • Integrating ESG goals into business operations and decision-making processes can provide long-term benefits beyond compliance.

    • Standardisation of ESG metrics and regulatory guidance is necessary to ensure consistent implementation across different companies and industries.

Value Optimisation for Enterprise Innovations - Philippines

    • On deciding which digital capabilities to manage centrally to drive efficiencies, it is important to measure scalability in reducing the cost to serve, while managing time resources spent.

    • On increased cybersecurity risks, a centrally guided cybersecurity roadmap is crucial for conglomerates, with businesses at varying degrees of digital maturity. The discussion highlighted the importance of the minimum viable security product (MVSP), which establishes a baseline security checklist for effective cybersecurity management in the evolving digital landscape.

    • On enabling a hybrid work model. The shortage of skilled digital workers in the Philippines means that organisations that wish to hire these resources have to offer a hybrid work environment as table stakes. However the availability of technologies such as 3D modelling has also made previously resource intensive work such as maintaining remote sites more efficient. Several companies have also started exploring how to use generative AI to plug the gap. Philippines, with the youngest median age of 25.7 amongst the ASEAN-5, seems to be an an inflection point when it comes to the evolution of work culture

    • On conglomerates, business consolidation and the value it provides. Mergers and acquisitions are key tools to utilize in extracting value and the Philippines has seen its fair share of consolidation, especially within the banking industry. Discussions centred around creating effective shared services and utilizing scale for technology adoption.

Embracing Volatility, Maximising Value - Indonesia

    • As businesses adjust to a post-pandemic world, they face a rise in digital service demand. Anteraja's CEO discusses the need for operational strategy adjustments. Healthcare companies seek innovation in customer outreach. Investing in technology and digital infrastructure is crucial for resilience and competitiveness.

    • Market volatility demands agile adaptation from businesses. Blue Bird Group's President Director, Pak Sigit Djokosoetono, highlights the impact of fluctuating supply and demand, evolving consumer behavior, and external factors like global politics and natural disasters. To succeed, enterprises must enhance productivity, manage costs, and embrace adaptability and agility. Predicting future demand is challenging amidst volatility. In healthcare, supply chain disruptions and inflation increase costs, but technology can help improve services and reduce expenses. By optimizing internal operations, businesses can maintain control while waiting for a better environment.

    • Investing in technology is no longer enough for success in today's business landscape. Enterprises need transparency and collaboration with tech providers to achieve desired outcomes. Transitioning to newer technology should consider long-term financing costs. Alliances with tech giants drive efficiency and productivity. Partnering with technology providers enhances business effectiveness.
