Cybersecurity Centre Warns of Attacks by Alleged Indonesian Hackers

New Strait Times | 8 February 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Cyber Coordination and Command Centre (NC4) has detected an increase in cyberthreats targeting Malaysian government agencies, organisations and educational institutions following the maritime incident in Morib, Selangor, where several Indonesian nationals were shot dead.

In a statement, NC4 warned that hacktivist groups, allegedly based in Indonesia, had formed alliances to launch cyberattacks against Malaysian entities.

They included website defacements, credential leaks, unauthorised access and distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.

"The ongoing cyber campaign has resulted in unauthorised access to systems and networks, website defacements and potential data leaks, including personally identifiable information.

"Government agencies, military-linked institutions and other critical sectors remain primary targets with intelligence indicating these attacks are retaliatory, linked to the recent maritime incident," it said in a statement early this week.

NC4 also said many of the hackings were believed to be facilitated by stolen credentials, likely obtained through malware infection.
