UNITED NATIONS, New York — The Philippines called for the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) during the United Nations Arria-Formula meeting on “Harnessing Safe, Inclusive, and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence for International Peace and Security,” emphasizing the need for strict adherence to international law, particularly in military applications.

In its statement, the Philippine delegation underscored the growing influence of AI in global defense and security, urging the international community to ensure that the development and deployment of AI technologies are grounded in legal, humanitarian, and ethical standards.

Paolo Marco Mapula, Third Secretary and First Committee expert of the Philippine Mission to the United Nations, who is also assisting in the Security Council, asserted that the use of AI—especially in military contexts—must be firmly anchored in existing international legal frameworks. “Accountability, transparency, and compliance with humanitarian norms are non-negotiable,” he said.
